HAIR ON VACATION
So we all agree that curly hair is a whole bunch of personalities and not all of them are nice so I’m going to tell you about the personality of my hair at 65. It sucks. It just remembered that it’s menopausal so it’s thinner than it’s ever been, curlier than it’s ever been, and lifeless and I find myself doing the things that I am telling people not to do like using two products to get it to cooperate. But it’s not working so I’m going to take a step back and get to the bottom of this problem and see if I can correct it. Stay tuned…
So there are a few reasons in my case why my hair was thinning. I realized that my stomach was not happy for the last few months, which caused me to have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which caused me to have a little bit of hair thinning. So now things are back in control and I am feeling much better. My hair is getting thicker and better, but I have to get a lot more frequent haircuts to get rid of the thin ends to make it look thicker, so I’m back to using one product only and most of the time, no products at all. I am enjoying running my hands through my hair. Blow drying it a little bit which I always encourage everyone to do in the winter for a different reason.
HAIR IN THE WINTER. !!!!!
Here are some things to expect in the wintertime. Your hair may feel a little dry, less curls, no volume. Here’s how we are going to treat it.
The first thing is you need to get a new haircut for the season. Second, you need to modify your products and use less of it, but make sure you use leave-in-conditioners all the time. The heat in the house dries your skin and your hair so keeping your hair hydrated will help a lot. For those of you who use the “Hold On Gel”, get your new mixture for the winter time because it has more hydration than hold for those who are using anti-frizz.
Creams and oils? You don’t have to use them anymore because the humidity is very low, and I’m sure your scalp and your hair will appreciate less products.
Accumulative products versus water soluble products. What is the difference between the two? It’s a simple test you can do at home after you wash your hair. If your hair squeaks clean you’re good; there’s nothing on the hair. But, if you wash your hair once, and twice and get out of the shower and the hair still feels sticky and tacky, then you have a problem, and that is too much product. They call it “accumulative” because every time you use it it accumulates (builds up) on the hair shaft. That can be very bad for your hair. New hair that is struggling to come out will have a very hard time penetrating the hair follicle because of the buildup on the scalp which can cause hair loss! The second reason is because it leaves the hair heavy and wet all the time and also prevents the curl from curling hair. You will notice that your hair will shine, but it's not movable. It also could cause acne, and it will also prevent your scalp from producing its own natural oil for conditioning.
My hair recommendation would be, “Stay away from accumulative products and stick with water soluble products!” If your hair is not chemically treated and in good condition, you could wash it every other day if you are active and play sports, there’s no problem with you washing your hair every other day. It’s best to once in a while let it go and give it a break. There are new products for curly hair coming out almost weekly. It’s a huge market and it’s a money making industry. Don’t get sucked into it.
Curly hair is supposed to be simple, easy, attractive and fun to wear. If you are using more than one product for normal curl happy girls, then you are using too much. Hair that is wiry may need more, but that would mean the hair has to be coarse from the time it grows out. Then you may need a curling cream and a jet in the summer. In the winter curly hair always needs less frizz control but more hydration because there’s less humidity and the heat in your home is drying.
So my advice to you is in the winter is wash less, hydrate more after the shower if your hair is normal. Skip the conditioner in the shower.
If you have problems take the time to identify what might be causing your lackluster hair. Watch out for chemicals, and heat styling because they can break the protein bonds. Talk to your hairstylist about your trouble spots.
But if you have normal natural healthy hair, use a conditioner in the shower, don’t tangle your hair when you wash it and you won’t need a detangler! If needed use a little bit of hydration when you get out of the shower and your hair will thank you.
